Are You Working With A Reputable Company?

While timeshares can be great fun for the whole family, potential customers have recently been steering clear of them due in part to two main factors: (1) the current state of the economy and (2) the negative image that timeshare scams have inflicted on the industry as a whole.  If you are thinking about purchasing a timeshare, then it is imperative that you make sure that you are not walking into one of those scams.  The Better Business Bureau has provided a list of important aspects to consider before purchasing any timeshare.

Check Out Your Timeshare Company

Firstly, you need to use a business that you can trust.  Look up reviews written by previous customers of the company with which you are considering doing business, and make sure that others have had positive experiences.  It is also wise to check the Better Business Bureau’s rating of the company.  An “F” rating from the BBB is equivalent to a big sign that reads “Stay Away, Far Away!”

Secondly, you should verify that the sales company has all required timeshare sales licenses.  The licensing requirements are different in every state, so be sure to check with your state’s licensing entity for details.

Thirdly, the BBB suggests that you should be wary of any upfront fees required by sales companies who offer to sell your timeshare.  If the company has not put their signature to paper by the time that you give them money, then they could back out but keep any “non-refundable” application or paperwork fees that you have already paid.

Forth, you must get the facts on the figures!  You need to know what and when you are agreeing to pay and what exactly you will get for said money.  Do not assume anything – always verify.

Finally, the Better Business Bureau suggests the age-old idea, “If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.”  Sales companies are in business to make money, and if the deal makes it sound like the company is getting the short end of the stick, then you need to take a step back and re-review the deal, because it is more likely that you are the one who will end up being short-changed.

All in all, timeshares can be a great value and fantastic fun, but only if you make sure that you get the right one.  Be sure that you are working with a trustworthy company and always check and re-check the facts of the deal before you sign any contracts or make any payments.
